Mel Robbins is an American author, speaker, and podcast host known for practical approaches to behavior change, confidence, motivation, and taking action despite hesitation. Her work, including The 5 Second Rule, emphasizes interrupting overthinking with deliberate movement. This quotation expresses a recurring theme in her teaching: a bias toward action can increase the felt sense that we have influence over our lives.
What This Means
Loss of control is stressful partly because it makes us feel passive. We wait for an answer, outcome, decision, or circumstance that belongs partly—or entirely—to someone else.
Action cannot restore control over everything. It can restore contact with what remains ours.
We can make the call, gather information, prepare, exercise, ask for help, set a boundary, or complete the next available step. These actions may not guarantee the desired outcome, but they change our role from spectator to participant.
The distinction matters because agency is not the same as control. Control asks whether we can determine what happens. Agency asks whether there is something meaningful we can still choose.
A bias toward action is useful when the action is thoughtful rather than frantic. Movement should serve the situation, not merely relieve the discomfort of waiting.
Why It Matters
When uncertainty feels overwhelming, divide the situation into what you control, what you influence, and what you cannot currently affect.
Then choose one useful action from the first category. Make it small enough to complete.
The purpose is not to pretend the uncertainty disappeared. It is to reconnect with the part of the situation that still responds to your choices.
A Moment of Reflection
Where do you currently feel powerless? What useful action remains completely within your control today?
Carry This With You
Useful action can restore a sense of agency even when the larger outcome remains uncertain.
