Play can look unproductive because its outcome is not always known in advance. That uncertainty is part of its value.

In play, we test possibilities, change rules, imitate, invent, fail without catastrophe, and follow curiosity simply because something is interesting. Those behaviors create a rich environment for learning.

Pearce’s claim is intentionally expansive, but the underlying idea is practical: intelligence develops through engagement, not only instruction. A mind that is allowed to explore can discover relationships that a tightly scripted task might never reveal.

Adults often remove play from learning once an activity becomes serious. Yet experimentation remains essential in science, art, business, problem-solving, and relationships. We still need spaces where the question is not only “What is the correct answer?” but “What happens if?”

Play keeps that question alive.

A playful approach does not mean treating important work carelessly. It means creating low-risk space for experimentation before every outcome has to count.

Try a version you know you might discard. Rearrange the process. Test the strange idea. Learn a skill without needing to monetize it. Give curiosity a little room before evaluation arrives.

Those experiments can generate knowledge that efficiency alone would never produce.
