Eckhart Tolle

Eckhart Tolle is a German-born spiritual teacher and author known for The Power of Now and A New Earth. His writing emphasizes present-moment awareness, observing thought without complete identification with it, and reducing the psychological struggle created by resistance to what is already happening. This quotation comes from The Power of Now and describes stress as the tension created when attention is physically in one moment while psychologically insisting on another.

The Idea Behind the Words

There are practical reasons to think about the future. We plan appointments, prepare for deadlines, and work toward goals. Tolle is pointing to something different: the mental refusal of the moment we are currently living.

We sit in traffic while insisting we should already be home. We work on one task while resenting that another is unfinished. We spend today imagining that life will properly begin when circumstances change.

That gap between “here” and “there” adds a second layer of difficulty. The situation may already be inconvenient or demanding; resistance adds an internal argument with the fact that it exists.

Acceptance does not mean liking the situation or abandoning plans to change it. It means acknowledging where we actually are before deciding what useful action is available.

Presence brings attention back from the imaginary location where everything is different and returns it to the only place action can occur: this moment.

Putting the Idea to Work

When stress rises, ask whether the pressure comes entirely from the task itself or partly from mentally demanding that the current moment be different.

Sometimes the answer is action: make the call, leave earlier, ask for help, change the plan. Other times nothing immediate can be changed, and the useful move is to stop fighting the fact that the moment is already here.

Either way, reality becomes easier to work with once we meet it where it is.

Stress is caused by being ‘here' but wanting to be ‘there.'

Something to Reflect On

Where are you physically “here” while mentally insisting you should already be “there”? What changes if you work with this moment before trying to escape it?

Something Worth Remembering

Stress can intensify when we mentally resist the present instead of meeting it before deciding what comes next.
