Meet the Giant
Paulo Coelho
Paulo Coelho is a Brazilian novelist whose internationally known works include The Alchemist, Brida, and The Pilgrimage. His writing often centers on aspiration, courage, meaning, intuition, and the willingness to pursue a larger vision of one’s life. He used this wording in a published conversation with Oprah Winfrey while reflecting on the unusually ambitious dreams he recorded in his youth.
What This Means
Thinking big is sometimes dismissed as fantasy, and it can become fantasy if it never connects with reality. But thinking small carries its own risk: we may eliminate possibilities before testing whether they were actually beyond us.
Coelho’s statement is about the boundaries created by expectation. What we believe is worth attempting affects what opportunities we notice, which people we approach, how much effort we invest, and how quickly we interpret difficulty as a signal to stop.
Big thinking is not the belief that we deserve unlimited success. It is permission to consider a larger field of possibility. The next step still has to survive contact with facts, skills, resources, and consequences.
A useful mindset holds ambition and reality together. Imagine expansively, then work concretely. The vision widens the destination; disciplined action tests whether a path can be built.
Why This Matters
Many self-imposed limits are invisible because they appear as assumptions rather than decisions: “people like me do not do that,” “that is too ambitious,” or “I could never learn this.”
Questioning those statements does not require replacing them with guaranteed optimism. Replace certainty with curiosity: What would it take? Who has done something similar? What skill would I need first?
That shift enlarges the world without pretending obstacles are imaginary. Possibility becomes something to investigate.
A Moment of Reflection
Where have you made your world smaller by deciding in advance what is unrealistic for you? What larger possibility deserves at least an honest investigation?
Carry This With You
Expansive thinking can widen the possibilities we are willing to notice, investigate, and pursue.
